 Professional Intelligence for Enterprise Leadership

  • 6 units

Leadership is more than a set of competencies; it's the dynamic engagement of knowledge, innovative change and inspired human capital that builds the capacity of the leader. As managers, and ultimately leaders, we move from our technical knowledge and increase our comfort with more ambiguous, qualitative decision-making. Faced with creating the future, leaders must master themselves, engage with interpersonal dynamics, teams and relationships; manage change, take risks, and handle conflict and communication as part of a creative process. With an increasingly autonomous workforce, organizations, too, are declaring their need to "engage" employees and work through people on both their learning and their performance curve to achieve the precise fiscal metrics of success. Professional Intelligence for Enterprise Leadership bridges these "softer" skills that produce "hard" results in the realm of "human capital."

The course calls upon the science of applied emotional intelligence as it relates to leadership and achieving organizational performance. The learning emphasizes not only the development of skill, but also the self-knowledge, self-management, and interpersonal effectiveness that builds capacity of the individual to lead. The framework of the course is to learn constructs in class, and apply them in "real world" situations. This real-time learning is evidenced in two ways. First by applying and reflecting upon principles learned during day-to-day, real-time encounters and also, through participation in a leadership results project work that allows participation and learning in action. Using both evidenced-based theory as well as experiential learning, students will also be exposed to guest lecturers that embody the principles learned in the class. Grades are based on completing a leadership project, journal entries and individual and class engagement.
