Career Services
Carnegie Mellon's prominence in technology education puts students face-to-face with more than 100 companies, including the most sought-after technology and consulting firms. The Career Services staff works with the students to prepare, select and secure employment with these firms. Among the services offered are career counseling, resume building, interviewing techniques, on-campus recruiting, and networking events held in major cities. Placement rates at time of graduation are comparable to top MBA programs.
Career Counseling
A Career Services staff member will provide guidance, advice and information throughout your career search. Because this counselor will know you well, he or she can work with you to tailor a career search that achieves your goals. Typical counseling activities include:
- Assessment of skills and career interests
- Resume reviews
- Discussion of internship and job search strategies
- Job offer review and salary negotiation discussions
- Alumni contacts and other networks
Resume Assistance
Your resume is the first impression you make on an employer and serves as a valuable marketing tool. You should submit your resume to your career counselor for review before submitting it to hiring organizations. Once you have finalized your resume, you will submit it to employers yourself.
Resume collections are conducted for organizations via TartanTRAK, a web-based on-campus recruiting system. Through TartanTRAK, you will send your resume directly to employers that interest you. To use all of the TartanTRAK features, students must register and complete an orientation session at http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/tartanTRAK/index.html.
Workshops
Workshops are offered throughout the year on a variety of job search tools and skills, including resume writing, interviewing, negotiating job offers, business etiquette, case interviews, etc. Panel discussions and speakers provide insights into specific careers and organizations; these will be announced throughout the year.
Job Listings
MonsterTrak is a web-based service through which employers can list position openings for students and alumni. Postings for full-time and internship positions are made available to you via the Internet, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
On-Campus Interviewing and Presentations
The University's central Career Services office uses a web-based recruiting system, TartanTRAK, that allows you to participate in campus interviews, resume drops, and upcoming events arranged through Warner Hall. You will need to visit TartanTRAK and complete the on-line registration.
A variety of employers arrange interview schedules and information sessions at Carnegie Mellon. Please visit the Carnegie Mellon Career Center, located on the ground floor of Warner Hall or check their website for information about employer events, information sessions and on-campus recruiting.
Reporting Job Offers and Job Acceptances
Please report your employment offers to us using the Job Offer Reporting Form . This enables us to provide you with information to negotiate with employers and to help employers make competitive offers to you and other students. Your specific compensation information is kept strictly confidential. We compile the data and report averages and medians.
Alumni Career Network and Mentor Program
The Alumni Career Network represents a large group of alumni who have volunteered to serve as a resource to current students. They can provide advice on jobs, internships, their organizations, tips for the job search process, the cities in which they live and much, much more. To request information about alumni in the Network, complete the Request for Alumni Listing. Your request can include geographic area, functional area of the position, or type of organization. Your report will be returned via email.
The Alumni Mentor program matches graduates with current students based on career interests and goals. Mentors provide information and advice related to career and professional development and can serve as valuable contacts both now and in the future.
